Is the Wienfluss still a river? In Vienna, it is severed from its floodplains and cut off from its groundwaters. It no longer nourishes the land. It carries barely any sediment. Its wastewater counterpart drains the material traces of its urbanised catchment, an area of around 5,000 ha, into the wastewater treatment plant at Simmering. And yet during the September 2024 floods the force of the Wien’s waters broke through its stone bed creating a structural diversity where before there was none. Is this body of water trying to become a river once more?
